pandora’s music box

A few months ago, some friends turned me on to Pandora Radio, a free on-line radio station that plays what you ask it to. It’s pretty amazing. I find myself listening to it all day and night, changing my musical jumping point.

Here’s how it works- all you do is enter a name of a band or artist and they play songs, commercial-free, of the artist you put in, as well as others that they think you’d like based on what you’ve asked for. You can even guide it along the way, indicating that you like or don’t like a certain track and it takes that into consideration.

What am I listening to now? I entered Francoise Hardy, and in addition to her, they’ve played April March, Serge Gainsbourg, Dusty Springfield, Nico, Devendra Banhart, and Claudine Longet. An awesome mix tape indeed.

Go check out what Pandora has in her box for you.

new in the shop: pillows!

I first launched these at San Francisco’s first Renegade Craft Fair as a test to see if anyone was interested. And wow, was I surprised! I nearly sold out of them. So I took that as a yes!

Stop by the shop and see the 16 inch square throw pillows in lots of fun vintage inspired prints. I think they are pretty darn adorable, if I may say so myself!

But if you’re interested, numbers are very limited, so I wouldn’t wait if I were you!

the gem of hollywood

I can’t believe it has taken me 4 years to go, but now that I have, I want to tell everyone just how great it is. So here goes. The Hollywood Bowl is amazing, and you should go tonight. No matter who is playing. Just go.

Hollywood gets a bad rap. Sure it is full of crap and tourists, but there are some special treats tucked in here and there. And this is one of them not to be missed.

The last two Thursdays I have been there to see the Los Angeles Symphony play. The first week was all Mozart, including piano solos and a mezzo-soprano. This past Thursday was headlined with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Both performances were really great.

It would be great to sit outside in the open air watching the symphony play. But top that off with the fact that you can bring in your own food and drink, and that tickets for classical and jazz nights Tuesday - Thursdays start at $1.00, and it becomes something even better. It really warms the heart to see loved ones, groups of friends, and old couples with their picnic baskets and totes full of snacks and wine. All night long you can hear the sound of corks popping out of bottles. But it isn’t crazy. It is perfectly civilized and fun.

I encourage you to visit the bowl if you’re in the LA area. Such a special treat, nestled into the hills of Hollywood.
