book party recap

I’ve had a flurry of activities in the last couple of weeks, and I feel like I’m just getting back into things! So I have some catching up to do.

First up, the lovely ladies at the Urban Craft Center in Santa Monica threw me a really great book party for Chic & Simple Sewing. It was a fantastic turnout and it looked like everyone was having a great time learning needle felting demos, screen printing demos, eating delicious cupcakes, and shopping my rack of clothes. Towards the end of the night, Rhea gave me a lovely introduction and I spoke briefly about my path as a crafter/artist/seamstress. Afterwards, I put together a fashion show of all the garments from the book, starring brave volunteers, former students, and friends. And after that, there was a lot of book signing to do!

Huge thanks to everyone at the UCC who worked so hard to put it on, to everyone that came out, to my volunteers for the fashion show, to Jennifer who worked my trunk show, and Charity (DJ Lady C) who rocked great music all night long.

Please enjoy some highlight photos from the party below. To see more, stop by my flickr page or the UCC blog post. Thanks everyone!

crafting for yourself

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about making more things for myself. One of the bad things about turning your craft into your job is that I hardly ever make anything for myself anymore. I know others in my line of work feel that too. But I’m thinking more and more about changing that. I’ve already planned that during my September Parisian holiday I’m going to crochet myself a scarf (once my mom teaches me of course!).

In thinking about crafting more for me, I’ve starting looking around flickr at quilts. I’m obviously an experienced sewer, but I’ve never quilted before. Well, once I made a quilt-like throw for my parents using men’s dress shirts, but it was hardly a proper quilt. I’m thinking about possibly making myself a quilt for my bed and have begun peeking around for some inspiration.

So far, I’m enjoying these that I found…

ray lamontagne at the hollywood bowl

What an amazing night. Ray LaMontagne with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra just blew me away. I didn’t record any video and those on you tube aren’t so great. But lucky for us, Ray stopped by the great KCRW station here in LA the next morning. For a lengthy 39 minute performance and interview session, watch the link below…
