bonne année!

On this New Year’s Eve, I wish you a fun, festive, and safe holiday! Keep your eye in the sky for a rare December blue moon (for many of us) or a rare January blue moon (for those further away). And some will see a partial lunar eclipse! So no matter where you are, there should be something amazing happening in the sky near you. This photo above is from my Christmas holiday, where the moon was very bright above the Big Sur yurt home of my brother.

See you all in 2010!

january classes!

Did you wish for a sewing machine this holiday season? If so, how about taking Intro to Sewing and learn how to use all those buttons and knobs! Or, already have the basics and want to move into something slightly harder? I’ve got three new garment classes with your name on them!

Perfect for LA winters, I’m teaching the Trench Coat and the Jacket projects from my book, Chic & Simple Sewing. These really are simple, so don’t psych yourself out if you’ve never done clothing before! And just in time for a romantic Valentine’s Day, whip up some sassy sleepwear in the Nightie class, also from my book.

Check out all the details on my classes page or in the shop. And, for a handy reference, you can download and print your very own calendar to hang on your fridge and use as a reminder!

Hope to see you in class!

the year in review

At the end of each calendar year, it’s always a nice time to stop and reflect on the last twelve months. For me, this has been quite a year, mostly all for the better. In no particular order, here’s my year in review:

- My book Chic & Simple Sewing hit bookshelves!
- I fulfilled a life-long desire to spend an extended amount of time in Paris
- My brother has returned to the state of California, and is now only a 6 hour drive away
- I had a great visit with my mom in August, and will have another one (along with my brother) in two days!
- I began teaching and met amazing friends and students, while releasing a ton of seamstresses and seamsters out into the world
- I had enjoyable after enjoyable encounters with my man Mike
- The kitties are still happy as ever and as healthy as can be

How could next year be even better?

- Even more quality time with friends and family
- Even more quality time to myself!
- Even more time in Paris
- Continue to strive for a balance between life, work, cooking, exercise, cleaning, etc…
- Craft more for me
- Plan a trip to NYC with my ladies
- Delegate
- Call my grandma more
- Replace my old, dying car

I hope this end of the year brings you and your loved ones together for fun and merriment! May you have a splendid holiday, whatever your traditions may be!

the empress of embroidery

Hey Los Angeles, here’s an opportunity just for you!

Visiting from Austin, Texas, the one and only Jenny Hart, owner and designer of Sublime Stitching, is having a book party tomorrow night for her new book, Embroidered Effects, at the fantastic Home Ec. Well, it’s not just a book party, it’s also a book signing, holiday party, and all-around good time to be had by all!

In case meeting Jenny isn’t enough, how about a live DJ, fantastic raffle give-aways (hello, I am hoping for the massage gift certificate!), and holiday treats and drinks! That should get you going!

On the off chance you don’t know Sublime Stitching or Jenny Hart, she is the reigning queen of craft, in my personal opinion. Anyone that writes books, makes products, has staff, and does her craft full-time is a goddess in my book. It’s so hard to pull off and succeed at, and she does it so well.

So, won’t you join us tomorrow night? Here are all the details:

voyage to pairs: the marché aux puces st-ouen de clignancourt

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been home from my trip to Paris for over two months already. I’m still in a bit of shock that it happened at all! But I do declare that it is time (maybe even overdue) to start telling stories of all that I saw and experienced on this amazing trip. So look for more posts on my “voyage to Paris!”

The first stop on this journey: the Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we headed off on the Metro to experience the biggest flea market in Paris. (We later found out that it is in fact the biggest flea market in all of Europe!) Sitting on the northern edge of Paris, the St-Ouen flea market is giant. You could spend a whole day up here and not see it all. The market is actually a cluster of buildings that house different styles of markets. Some are more like a mall, with aisles and little stores with things spilling out of them, and other areas are like outdoor malls, with little stores and open air passages. Those were my favorite, as they had the most eclectic collections of things. You can pretty much find everything you can imagine at St-Ouen, from $100,000 chandeliers to $.01 tube socks. My interests fell somewhere in the middle :)

Once we de-boarded the Metro, we headed up the street to the market buildings. We got turned around and eventually came in the back way, entering one of the fancier open-air markets. Seriously, there is some amazing stuff here. We then entered one of the mall-style buildings, where I quickly spotted some items that needed to come home with me. Here I found some vintage buttons and a gorgeous belt buckle. There were also some beautiful trims, but I skipped those. Little did I know that vintage buttons were everywhere at this flea market. I didn’t regret my early purchase, as I still preferred them to most others that I spotted, but if you’re in the market for vintage buttons, wow, this is the flea market for you! I also spotted an adorable lamp with red apples on the shade. But the logistics of trying to bring home a lamp with a ceramic base and large round shade seemed too daunting, so sadly I had to let it go.

After wandering this building, clearly it was time for a crepe! (When is it NOT time for a crepe?) From there, we headed to the best of the open-air markets that is known for having a little bit of everything. Here I picked up seven skeins of vintage yarn that has started taking shape into a scarf (my first crochet project!), and three vintage postcards of pin-up ladies on the beach. They all modeled with their hands on their heads. I thought that was hilarious! These are soon to be framed and hung in my home. We also passed a little cafe where a man was belting some Edith Piaf karaoke. Classic.

I could have spent a fortune in this place, but I kept it under control. My companion only picked up an adorable vintage postcard for his daughter. We were trying to keep our spending in control, can you tell? Wandering these three buildings proved plenty for us, so we had a couple of celebratory beers (at a table on the sidewalk, of course) and headed back to the Metro to take us to our adorable apartment. On my next Parisian trip, I will return to St-Ouen for sure, and this time with a tad bit more money budgeted specifically for this flea market!
