music monday: the dead weather

I think Jack White can do do no wrong. It’s just that plain and simple. The first time I heard this song, I was driving in LA and it came on the radio and I said out loud, to myself, what the HELL was that!?! I recommend turning up the volume on your computer speakers to 11 and enjoy.

french fri: learning french

Before we went to Paris last year, I thought I’d learn some French. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out so well. I just ran out of time and tried to at least catch some by listening to records and things on-line. I got by, and thanks to my man, we could communicate. This year, I’m signing up for 10 weeks of Saturday classes leading up to the trip so I can say more!

In all my on-line searching, I stumbled upon this hilarious Eddie Izzard bit about learning French. I hope my French lessons will lead me somewhere more useful!

hot hot heat

Shift Dress, originally uploaded by Becky OH.

It’s going to be 99 degrees in downtown LA today which is a perfect excuse to wear one of those super summery frocks you whipped up from my book. You did make one for this occasion, right?

This version is gorgeous in a retro print from the lovely Becky OH. If you made something from the book too, please share!

music monday: ray lamontagne

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you know of my love for Ray LaMontagne. He has a new album and I’m super excited to have more material from this amazing singer/songwriter. This song isn’t new, but it’s a gorgeous live performance of one of my favorite songs, Be Here Now. I hope you enjoy it!

new feature: french fri

Another new feature? Yes! Check back on Fridays to hear stories of my trip to France, tips on places to go, great things that are French-related… it could be anything! But it will somehow have something to do with France!

For today’s first entry, a restaurant that I can’t wait to go to when we return to Paris in 4 months. (Yay, only 4 months!!!) My man and I are both vegetarians, and as advanced as France is on some things, it was quite hard to eat out for us. There were some vegetarian restaurants and we found one neighborhood Thai spot that used tofu as a protein choice. But over all, we were really restricted at local bistros that have smaller menus. We ended up cooking in our apartment a lot, which we love doing and was much cheaper, but there were times we wanted a romantic night out and failed to find it.

But, I have high hopes for the relatively new restaurant Cru. It’s not 100% vegetarian, but there are a lot of veggie choices on the menu, which is enough for us! Heck, one good vegetarian choice is good enough for me! They have meat on the menu but claim to be a raw restaurant, which I don’t completely understand. If I’m remembering this right, you can heat things to a certain temp, which perhaps is hot enough to slowly cook meat. Either way, that also means that there are lots of non-meat options and I can’t wait to go!

Located in the quaint Village Saint Paul neighborhood.

new feature: music monday

I’ve been wanting to begin writing regular features, so today I’m going to start with Music Monday! Each Monday I’ll post some music I love. New, old, obscure, and totally well known… who knows what it will be!

For my first blog post on Music Monday, a band totally brand new to me with a super fun new song and video. Enjoy the band Hey Marseilles with their song Rio…
