Tomorrow I will be teaching the Baby Doll Dress class at The Urban Craft Center! There are a few spots left (last I heard) so contact the UCC and sign up today!
Need some inspiration? Below is a gorgeous version by the amazing seamstress Karissa of the blog Kitty Kitty Crafts. I LOVE her use of fabric choices! Beneath her is a version made by Jane, who learned to make her dress in my last Baby Doll Dress class. And below Jane is the version that I made for the book. You can make your version to fit your style!
Are you new to sewing? Well, don’t fear. This is a perfect project for someone who has taken my Intro to Sewing class and is looking to branch into garments. You’ll learn gathering, elastic casing, pattern reading, and more. Hope to see you there!
I’m seriously dying over the latest Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2010 collection that Karl Lagerfeld just presented in Paris this week. It’s classic, modern, futuristic, ladylike, and kinda punk rock all at once. I just don’t know how he does it.

Reminder! This Tuesday is the Reversible Wrap Skirt class at Home Ec! There are still a few spots available, so sign up today. For you beginners, don’t be afraid! Lots my Intro to Sewing students have moved right into this class, as it’s all straight stitch and ironing. And no matter what combo you choose, they always look amazing! See you Tuesday!
On heavy rotation in my home and studio right now - the new Vampire Weekend album, Contra. And note for you that haven’t purchased it yet, I have the LP, which comes with a code to download the MP3 for free, so you get both!

Just a quick note to those of you that were interested in the Hand-Carved Stamp class at Home Ec that I blogged about - Another class has been added to the calendar from 7pm-10pm on March 4th! So sign up today at the Home Ec site. But don’t wait, this class will sell out just as fast as the previous two did!
For once, I was a student at a Home Ec class instead of the teacher! Elinor Nissley from Krank Press taught a stamp making class in December and I really wanted to take it, but December was quite a busy month and I just couldn’t fit it in. Lucky for me, Elinor came back to do it again, and I jumped at the chance to take this class. And am I glad I did!
Since I work with fabric 24/7, my main motivation was to learn to stamp fabric, though after the class, I can see myself stamping everything! I’m interested in patterns, repeating and overlapping, and working with the fabric’s negative space. My trial runs were a circle that I overlapped into linking chain that I stamped on paper, and a simple tear-like shape to create a pattern in the negative space. I was using the photo below of a vent grate I took at Versailles as inspiration. Both need some work, but I can see the possibilities! So I think I can say with confidence, stay tuned for some new hand-printed items in the shop this summer!
I just finished another amazing weekend of inspiring Intro to Sewing students. Thanks to everyone who came out and congrats on your new skills! I hope to see you in another class… check out the schedule to see what’s up next!
A huge thanks to everyone who came to Jenny’s Handmade for Haiti bake sale at Home Ec! She raised a whopping $1,140 for Doctors Without Borders! I know I enjoyed my treats and I hope everyone that bought mine are enjoying them too! Great job everyone
